We're Able Project

About the Project

The aim of this project is to support people with disabilities to bring their abilities, skills and talents to a wider range of organisations and groups throughout Donegal.

The project is building on the research undertaken by Donegal Local Development Company called Volunteering, Community and People with Disabilities in Co. Donegal, funded by the National Disability Authority. This research uncovered a range of specific barriers faced by persons with disabilities in accessing volunteering opportunities throughout the community and voluntary sector. The We're Able project aims to support persons with disabilities in finding community and voluntary opportunities within their area. The 2006 report found that participation in volunteering was often restricted to disability groups and organisations; however people with disabilities have skills, knowledge and abilities which can be put to use across a wide range of groups within the community and voluntary sector. At Donegal Volunteer Centre we aim to support wide engagement and participation of differently abled citizens in all aspects of society in accordance with the Equal Status Act, 2000.
