James Mc Clean, Volunteer of the Month, February 2007

myraThe nomination for volunteer of the month in January 2008 is James McClean. James McClean is employed through the HSE North West as a job coach to assist people with disabilities to maintain paid employment in the open labour market.
In his voluntary role he is the National Chairperson of People with Disabilities in Ireland (PWDi) an organisation that has 26 networks around the country and a membership of over 60,000 members.
As well as National Chairperson, he also represents PWDi at European level on the European Disability Forum. He has also represented PWDi at International level in the deliberations at the United Nations where the United Nations Convention on the rights of people with disabilities was adopted after intense negotiations over a 2 week period.
James has spoken at conferences all over Ireland in promoting the inclusion of people with disabilities in every aspect of everyday life, be that social, community, or employment and training and also sits on a number of consultation bodies at local, national and ministerial level. He is a former Director, representing the East Donegal Forum, of Donegal Local Development Company and is currently representing all marginalised groups on the County Community Forum.
In James’ own words, his “phone is always on” and he makes daily representations on behalf of people with disabilities to a myriad of local and national statutory bodies.
He chairs the national Excellence Through Access awards that are administered by the National Disability Authority (NDA). He uses most of his annual leave in attending all these meetings as he feels that by using his own time rather than approved time off work he can preserve his independence as he is often called on to question the role and services provided by many statutory bodies including his own employer!
He is also currently Company Secretary of the Donegal Centre for Independent Living that provides Personal Assistants to people with a physical or sensory disability to enable them to live a more independent life.
Asked why he devotes so much time to his voluntary commitment, and sacrifices his family and social life, James has said that it is his aim to make a difference to at least one person with a disability each day that he rises from his bed.

TAKE A BOW, JAMES MCCLEAN!

Myra Corcoran- Volunteer of the Month, May 2007volunteerofthemonthMyra Corcoran was unanimously elected by the Board of Management of Letterkenny C.D.P as their Volunteer of the Year for 2007 to acknowledge the work she carries out on behalf of the project over the last four years. We acknowledge Mary's contribution to community development also, by nominating her as out volunteer of the month for May 2007.

Myra is married to Pat and they have 5 Children ranging in ages from 13 years to 32 years. She has been involved in voluntary work with the Letterkenny Community Development Project for about four years especially with the youth in our project. She is involved with the Summer Schemes, St. Patrick’s Day Parade, Glencar fun-week, Halloween Monster Bash, St. Bridget’s Cross-making and Santa in Isle of Doagh. Myra’s passion with youthwork lies mostly with Letterkenny C.D.P. Youth Carnival Band where she enjoys the behind the scenes work supporting the Youth worker and the children with the maintenance of costumes, supervision parades, ensuring there are refreshments and food etc. for all concerned. Myra says “ Band/Dance Practice, Costume Making, Washing and Ironing of costumes are some of behind the scenes chores that go un-noticed by the public, but it is all worth while when you see the children in their full colours performing”.

Myra acknowledges the great support she gets from her husband Pat, who is also involved in community work, and her other family members, friends and neighbours. Her daughter Mairead is a dancer in the Youth Carnival Band and her grandson Keelan, who is 9 years old, plays drums in the Band. She would like to see more parents/guardians and grandparents getting involved in voluntary work with Letterkenny Community Development Project as a way of making a difference where it counts, in the lives of our children. To quote Myra “Voluntary work is un-paid work, you don't have to do it, but you choose to do it to make a difference in your community”.

Looking at Myra’s efforts it’s not hard to see why we chose her as our Volunteer of the Year 2007. She puts many work hours, voluntarily, into the organising and planning of activities and events on behalf of Letterkenny C.D.P. and claims no credit for anything. She is a very unassuming person and chooses to remain in the background where she is one of the foundation stones of the youth project. By awarding her this honour we are able to say “Thank you Myra, we know the work you do because we see the results of it in the smooth running of activities and in the expression of enjoyment in the faces of the children and other volunteers you are supporting and motivating by your example”.
